LA CHARTREUSE ÉLIXIR VÉGÉTAL DE LA GRANDE-CHARTREUSE 10CL

In 1605, the Duke of Estrées entrusted the Carthusian monks with a manuscript containing a mysterious recipe composed of 130 plants, intended to create an "Elixir of Long Life." For over a century and a half, the monks refined this recipe. Thanks notably to Brother Jérôme Maubec, the final formulation was established in 1764, known as the "Élixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse." It was quickly distributed to local populations as a health remedy, particularly during the cholera crisis of 1832. Brother Charles was the first to market it locally, traveling from the monastery by donkey. Since 1764, the recipe for the Elixir has remained unchanged.

ELABORATION

The production of the Élixir Végétal takes several weeks and involves three stages: distillation to obtain the aroma, maceration to provide the natural color, and extraction to gather the beneficial properties of the 130 botanicals. Its virtues lie primarily in the use of these plants in their natural state.

TASTING NOTES

• It is a highly effective cordial, digestive, and tonic:
• Neat in a teaspoon
• In herbal tea or as a grog with honey and lemon
• A few drops on a sugar cube or a meringue
• In a cup of water in case of fatigue or discomfort
• A few drops in a cocktail to add an intense herbaceous note
