Located in the remote Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Harris Distillery was founded in 2015 as a "Social Distillery," dedicated to providing sustainable employment for islanders and curbing depopulation. While initially famous for its Sugar Kelp-infused gin, the distillery’s true soul is captured in its Single Malt: The Hearach (the Gaelic name for the people of Harris).
This specific expression highlights the distillery's exceptional wood program. The spirit is matured in a combination of bourbon barrels from three select Kentucky distilleries and Sherry casks (both Oloroso and Fino) from southern Spain. The result is a slightly peated malt that pays a complex, nuanced tribute to its island terroir.
TASTING NOTES
Character: Rich, smoky, and sophisticated.
Nose: Indulgent (gourmand) and warm. Notes of sweet cinnamon and cloves are brightened by a vibrant hint of orange zest.
Palate: A beautiful balance of sweetness and smoke. The taste of toasted walnuts and wild thyme is enveloped in the comforting essence of a crackling log fire.
Finish: Long, smooth, and velvety (suave). It leaves behind sophisticated traces of fine leather, licorice, and deeply toasted malt.
Style: A maritime Single Malt that blends traditional Sherry richness with subtle, earthy peat.
